German course C2
German C2 – communicating precisely, with nuance and authority
You already speak German very well. At C2 it is no longer about being understood, but about saying exactly what you mean – in the right tone, with the right word and at the right level of style.
Who is German C2 for?
When good German is no longer enough
C2 is the level for people who stopped having problems in everyday life long ago – and who still notice that a difference remains between their German and the German of their colleagues.
- Academics who publish, teach or do a doctorate in German
- Doctors and specialists who need to be precise in demanding conversations
- Managers who negotiate, moderate and speak in public
- Translators, journalists and everyone who works with language professionally
- Anyone who has passed C1 and realised that the last ten per cent are the hardest
What is the difference between C1 and C2?
From “correct” to “exactly right”
At C1 the point is to express complex content correctly and clearly. At C2 the point is choosing between several correct options – and knowing which of them is the right one in this situation.
- C1: you express complex thoughts correctly. C2: you express them precisely.
- C1: you know many words. C2: you distinguish between similar words.
- C1: your text is good. C2: your text sounds like you and suits the type of text.
- C1: you follow a discussion. C2: you steer it – including with irony and undertones.
- C1: mistakes are barely noticeable. C2: it is about fine points that native speakers find difficult too.
If you are not yet sure whether C1 or C2 is the right goal: go to German course C1.
Typical challenges at C2
This is what I hear most often at this level
“My German is correct, but it doesn't sound natural.”
Grammar and vocabulary are right – but the choice of words is a shade too formal, too direct or too neutral for the situation.
“I always use the same words.”
Your active vocabulary is large, but a small part of it carries ninety per cent of your conversations. The fine distinctions are missing.
“I understand idioms, but I don't use them.”
You recognise idioms passively. You do not dare to use them actively – for fear of striking the wrong note.
“I lack sharpness in discussions.”
Disagreeing, qualifying, being ironic, staying polite and still being clear – that calls for devices you can learn deliberately.
“My texts always get edited.”
Strong in content, uneven in language: shifts of register, sentence length, transitions. That is exactly what we can work on well.
“You can still hear where I come from.”
At C2, pronunciation is rarely about individual sounds, but about stress, rhythm and intonation.
This is what we train
What exactly we work on
- Stylistic precision: the right wording instead of the first one that comes to mind
- Synonyms and shades of meaning: why “erheblich”, “beträchtlich” and “massiv” are not the same thing
- Idiomatic language: using idioms actively and confidently
- Complex argumentation: thesis, objection, counter-objection, conclusion
- Demanding discussions: disagreeing, moderating, adding nuance
- Academic language: specialist texts, abstracts, scholarly conventions
- Professional communication: negotiation, criticism, difficult conversations
- Text editing: revising your own texts instead of rewriting them
- Presentations and rhetoric: structure, emphasis, impact
- Pronunciation and intonation: rhythm, sentence stress, intonation
- Individual error analysis: your recurring patterns, not general lists of mistakes
How it works
How we work at C2
At this level there is no textbook that you work through from front to back. The lessons start with your texts, your conversations and your goals.
Language diagnosis
We look at what you write and how you speak – and at exactly where the finer points are missing.
Your own material
You bring texts, presentations or recordings from your own everyday life. That is what we work on.
Focused training
One focus per session: style, idiom, argumentation or pronunciation.
Editing and correction
Your texts come back revised – with a reason given for every change.
Application
Discussion, presentation, negotiation – under realistic conditions.
Error analysis
Your recurring patterns are documented and dismantled step by step.
Individual lessons
C2 does not work off the peg
At C2 needs differ widely: a doctor needs different language from a lawyer, a doctoral student different language from a team leader. That is why C2 with me usually takes place as one-to-one lessons – online by video call, using your own material.
Frequently asked questions
Questions I am often asked
Do I need a C1 certificate to start with C2?
No. What counts is your actual level of German, not a certificate. In the introductory call we look together at where you stand.
Do you prepare students for a C2 exam?
Talk to me about your specific exam. The exams I support are listed in the exam preparation section.
How long does the way from C1 to C2 take?
That can only be answered honestly after a language diagnosis. C2 is less a question of the number of lessons than of focused work in the right places.
Can I bring my own texts?
Absolutely. At this level your presentations, articles, e-mails or abstracts are the best practice material there is.
Do the lessons take place online?
Yes, by video call. You receive materials and corrected texts as a PDF.
